The third annual Ruth Allen Memorial Run and Fun Walk will be held Saturday, August 11, 2012 in Deansboro, NY. The Run and Walk is named in memory of Ruth Allen, who, for many years, spearheaded the run and walk, which began in 1995 in conjunction with the Marshall Days in Deansboro. Discontinued a few years ago, that run was under the auspices of the Marshall Historical Society. This year we have the Town of Marshall Brothertown Association, Inc. to thank for their generosity. The proceeds of this event are targeted for a scholarship in Ruth’s name, tentatively named the Ruth Allen Citizenship Award. The organizers of the Ruth Allen Memorial Run and Fun Walk hope to emphasize the beauty and uniqueness of the area around Deansboro by having the run and walk mostly on the Marshall Towpath (former O&W rail bed). The work of the beavers adjacent to the trail is certainly a sight to behold.
In addition, the event is a good opportunity for families to participate together while stressing the importance of physical fitness. The run and walk is also part of the 2012 Route 20 Road Challenge Series of run/walk events, highlighting what communities on or near Route 20 have to offer.
The race director is Charlie Fisher. The run will begin at 9:00 a.m, and will go on for four miles, beginning in front of the Depot on Route 315, continuing down the Marshall Towpath until Burnham Road, turning on to Burnham Road until Route 315, and continuing down Rt. 315 towards Deansboro until the Towpath and the finish line. T-shirts will be offered to the first 100 registered participants, and there will be a raffle featuring prizes to runners and walkers alike, as well as trophies presented to the overall male and female run finisher, and medals to the top runners in each category: under 13; 14-18; 19-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-50; 60-69; 70+. Walkers will receive prizes for the oldest and youngest walker, and to the walker who traveled the farthest to participate. Everyone receives a finisher’s award.
There will be fruit, juice and water available following the race.
